Supercharge your Health with these food duos

Nutritionists say that if you combine certain foods several times a week you can super-charge your health.  A “super food” is something that contains multiple nutrients, which positively impact our health. A “super food duo” is when you combine foods to increase the absorption and availability of the nutrients.  They claim more nutrients mean less disease and better overall wellness.  Who wouldn’t want that?

The following five “super food duos” offer delicious ways to pair up these foods to maximize their potential health benefits.  I especially love the apples and chocolate duo!

Capsicum and Artichokes

When you combine iron rich foods (spinach, other leafy greens, artichokes and legumes) with those packed with vitamin C (tomatoes, capsicum, oranges and carrots) your body will absorb iron more effectively.

Green Tea with Lemon

Adding a squeeze of lemon to your green tea increases the catechins in the green tea which are essential to DNA repair.

Drinking Green Tea with fish helps to block mercury from entering your bloodstream. Green Tea can also help you lose weight more effectively.

Avocados and Tomatoes

Studies show that the monounsaturated fat found in avocados boosts the cancer fighting properties of lycopene found in tomatoes – this makes it four times more effective.

Dark Chocolate and Apples

Apples are rich in quercetin – an anti-inflammatory crucial to heart health.  Dark chocolate contains powerful anti-oxidants called flavonoids.  This pair helps to fight blood clots, improve the circulation and reduce the chances of heart disease.

Bananas and Yoghurt

This duo maximized the absorption of muscle-repairing glucose and amino acids.  After intense exercise, this combination speeds up muscle recovery while strengthening muscle cells.

There are other powerful food combinations such as berries and grains and fish and broccoli so if you are looking for ways to increase your energy and wellness it’s worth investigating and maybe trying to find your vitamins and minerals via delicious meals rather than expensive vitamin supplements.
